NOT ALL SILVER LINING ? THE GREAT RECESSION AND ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS Paola

چکیده
We provide new evidence on the impact of recessions on traffic accidents by exploiting the case of Spain, where the effects of the 2008 economic crisis have been among the strongest in the developed world. We exploit differences in the incidence of the recession across Spanish provinces due to the unequal evolution of the real estate bubble across the territory. We use a unique dataset on the universe of traffic accidents in Spain between 2004 and 2011. We first follow the literature on the topic and examine the impact of the economic crisis on the probability of having a traffic accident. However, we also go one step further, as we are able to identify any changes in the composition of both victims and driving behaviors as a result of the crisis. First, our results show that the Great Recession reduced traffic accidents in Spain. Second, for the compositional effects, we report decreased probabilities of dying or reporting a serious injury. More important, we also detect an increase in the probability that people involved in an accident abuse alcohol and drugs. Our results are robust to different measures of the treatment (i.e., employment in the construction sector) and the use of a spatial fixed effects model and are not biased by anticipatory effects. Finally, we show that our findings are driven by less-populated areas. Thus, we suggest that alcohol and drug control measures be reinforced during recessions and more attention should be devoted to rural areas to to strengthen the reduction of road traffic accidents. ∗We are thankful for their comments on previous drafts of this work to Catia Nicodemo and the participants at the Second Workshop of Spatial Health Econometrics (University of York). Traffic injury mortality trends in children and adolescents in Lithuania among road users.
This study analyzes traffic mortality trends among road users from 1998 to 2012 in children and adolescents aged 0-19 years in Lithuania. National mortality data of pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and car occupants were used to compare trend lines. The study revealed that 56% of the deceased in road traffic crashes were car occupants, while 24% were pedestrians. The incidence of death fro...

The annual numbers of road deaths in Australia 1950-2007 are shown in Figure 11.. Fatal crash trends since 1950 fall into four distinct phases. In the first phase covering the 1950s and 1960s, national fatality levels steadily increased to reach a peak of almost 4,000 deaths in 1970. The second phase covered the 1970s and saw fatality numbers remain at nearpeak levels of around 3,500 throughout...
متن کاملWill the recession be bad for our health? It depends.
The recent financial and economic crisis has raised major concerns in the public health community that death, illness and disability will rise in both rich and poor countries across the globe, and that the operation of health systems will be compromised both by increased demand for treatment and reduced health budgets. Such fears are supported by, among others, a wealth of epidemiological evide...
متن کاملBy a Silken Thread: Regional banking integration and pathways to financial development in Japan’s Great Recession
We examine the impact of cross-prefectural differences in financial integration on the regional spread of Japan’s Great Recession in the early 1990s. In prefectures with many small manufacturing firms, post-1990 growth was significantly lower if low levels of banking integration with the rest of the country before 1990 existed. The least financially integrated and most credit-dependent prefectu...

Floods through inundated urban environments constitute a hazard to the population and infrastructure. A series of field measurements were performed in an inundated section of the City of Brisbane (Australia) during a major flood in January 2011. Using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV), detailed velocity and suspended sediment concentration measurements were conducted about the peak of the f...
